how to grow longer, healthier hair while wearing k-tip extensions

You’ve been sold the concept that ‘extensions help your hair grow” and yet you’ve heard women talk about their experience being just the opposite. Or maybe you yourself have experienced breakage and fallout from extensions. So, is it really true that your hair can get healthier from having extensions in? Or is that just something beauty professionals say to try to sell you on spending thousands in the salon? Personally- I think the answer is contingent on a few simple things.

If you haven’t heard of the k-tip method, it’s time for you to be exposed to a whole new world. K-tip extensions are the new it-girl of the extension business. They have taken over LA, and are now slowly spreading to the home-town cities. Unlike weft and tape in extensions- this method might actually leave you feeling like you haven’t been ‘scammed’ and left with less hair than before.

DISCLAIMER! All methods of extensions are allegedly safe for your hair. It really all depends on the install and the at home maintenance. The quality of your install should be an investment- not a ploy to avoid ‘outrageously high prices’. If you’re going to get hair extensions, invest in a good install and treat your hair like it's the most expensive thing you own.

And truthfully- your hair really is the most expensive thing you own, whether you grew it yourself or bought it. It all came at a price. Hair holds precious memories of all the seasons of life that you walked through as it grew out. It shows your stress levels, hormone changes and nutrition.

As women, we so often are forced to ask ourselves how we can better our appearance. If we have the energy and resources, we really do go out of our way to improve ourselves so we can show up better for the world.

Because of this, hair extensions have become a beauty necessity for so many women. I like to say that all beauty services should just be an extension of our natural beauty and not just a vain cover-up of our insecurities. So I believe that the install should be thoughtfully curated to match your density and texture- not just for a beautiful blend and natural finished product- but also for maximum protection of your hair and scalp to preserve your naturally beautiful hair with integrity.

Minimal friction between your real hair and extension hair and weight distribution of the extension hair for a happier scalp are VITAL to the integrity of the service. And those two things you can’t do at home. It is 100% the responsibility of the artist providing the service to order the right texture, and do a thoughtful and detailed installation.

Then after that, all that really truly matters are brushing and oiling your extensions. Using a sheila stotts brush from roots to ends to ensure your bonds aren’t getting tangled at the root and oiling your ends (every night!) especially where the ends of your actual hair and the extension hair meet keep your actual hair strong and protected.

Think of it like a straw of hay in a hay bale, instead of just strown about and getting tossed by the wind. The more hair, the more protected and strong each strand is. This is what really truly helps you feel like your ends that always seem to break faster than they grow are actually started to gain length- because of the strength and support.

Lastly, keeping your scalp CLEAN is super important- also just in general with or without extensions. You do not want build up on your scalp- so a shampoo that lathers really well is going to make it much easier to get inbetween all of the bonds. I know it can be a lot of work to wash, dry and style every couple of days. But depending on how oily your hair gets and how much your scalp sweats, it's important to wash as often as needed to make sure your scalp is breathing. Which is honestly a bonus, because don’t you feel absolutely powerful on wash day?

So, if you’re wondering if it's really possible to grow longer, healthier hair while wearing k-tips, the answer is a complex YES. You MUST trust your service provider, and you must take care of your scalp and your ends at home. Those are non-negotiables. Then, after 6 months, a year, two years, you will see a noticeable difference in your own hair, all while having fabulous longer fuller hair in the process. Is it an investment worth making? You tell me.
